Another Decorating Dilemma

I'm joining Amanda at Serenity Now once again for a Decorating Dilemmas Party. Go check it out and see if you can help with some dilemmas, or post your own!

Mine is another tv issue. My dilemma is... what do I do to the top of it? We obviously have the cable box up there, as well as the PS2 right now (will eventually be replaced with a DVD player) and the Wii. We've talked about storing the Wii in the cedar chest, not sure yet though.

You can see what I have there now... two apothecary jars (one holding old clothespins & one holding animal neck tags... we found those hanging from a tree out back, the guy who built this house owned goats), a Fenton dish, a washboard-turned-shelf, two pictures, some vintage cards & floral frogs spelling our last name, and my Target bird. This stuff kind of just got put there, and I'm not really happy with it. Also, that picture is coming down. I was thinking about a vinyl graphic of a branch, possibly with a bird. That curtain is to our sliding glass door. What should I do?

I would like to use things I already own. I thought about this, I had also thought about putting it in the bathroom. I've had it about 2 years, and finally decided I need to paint it. I'm thinking ivory or white. Don't mind Hisser, she's so nosey.

And here are the candlesticks I've collected so far, as well as a cheese dome. These also need to be painted, and I have some old books as well. So please, what should I do? I appreciate any suggestions!

This is off topic, but here is another sneak peek at our table! But no, I dont think it's finished yet. Still some work to be done.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. 1. I LOVE the sneak peak at your table!!! :) Pretty!

    2. The little chicken wire house is cute, and would be fun painted white OR a shocking color like aqua blue. Paired with white/ivory candlesticks and painting some of the other accessories white/ivory would bring the space together and not make it seem like you have too many different things up there. I think I see an aqua-ish dish/bowl up there, so that would help.

You have some great stuff! Hope you can help me with my little dilemma too. :)

When you have a chance, please edit your link to go directly to the party post so your readers will be able to find it later on. :)

Thanks for joining! Hope you have fun mingling with the other partiers. ;)

  2. Hi! I think you have some great stuff to work with!

If it were me I would remove the small items, like the last name thing, and the small pictures...they seem too small for the space.

I would keep the apothecary jars (love them!) and their contents, and also add the candlestick collection to that grouping...and maybe the other little dish if it looks okay.

I would use the chicken wire house shelf over by your washboard display, unless they're the same height...then that wouldn't look good! But I think if they are staggered they would look really cute together!

  3. I love your chicken wire house! I also have a similar problem at my house with TV related boxes stacked on top. Maybe you could try severeal larger scale items and larger pictures/decor on the wall in related colors to tie them together....Debbie

  4. Hi, I'm stopping over from the decorating dilemmas party! Vignettes are tricky for me too. I'm wondering if maybe you could use a decorative box (or just cover a cardboard box in scrapbook paper) slightly larger than your cable box and maybe cut a little hole so that it can still recieve info from your remote (or maybe the remote's signal is strong enough to go through a thin box? You'd have to play around with that). That way the box just becomes another level to display things on allowing you vary the height of some of your items and maybe beef up the height of some of the smaller items?

  6. My suggestions is to go to radio shack and spend 60ish dollars on a eye- that allows you to put all your electronic componets in a cupboard or even another room and then your remote works with the little eye and you dont have to look at them, We have it and it works great. Can't wait to see the rest of the table, love the sneak peak!Love the apothicary jars keep them. I would pain the candle sticks all one color and get some fun candles!

  7. I also find arrangements like this to be a bit tricky. I have learned that arrangements work well with a variety of sizes. I think part of the issues with this area is that everything is about the same size so it all blends. I would put the little chicken wire piece up there, perhaps with your red piece in front of it, and the apothecary jars to the side. You can really mix everything together by using all the colors INSIDE the jars, maybe with buttons or something?

I'm sure this is all clear as mud, lol! I'm no decorator. You have some really great items, I'm sure you'll get it looking snazzy.

  8. Hey Wendy! Its your swap partner, Sue. I'm all for keeping things simple - how about a few baskets on top filled with dried hydrangeas or other seasonal branches, maybe one or two candles as an accent. You can also store stuff in the baskets you want to keep out of sight - a bonus in my opinion!

  9. I have those same candlesticks and I LOVE them! Good luck with the decorating dilemma... we have a similar problem with our entertainment center. Can't wait to see the big table reveal!

  10. I would move all of the electronics off to the side (and start stashing away money for the "eye" that roseylittlethings suggested) and not try to decorate them into an arrangement.

I like the red washboard and the chicken wire house (I wouldn't paint it, I like the color), so I would keep those and the apothecary jars. Songbirdtiff mentioned buttons for the jars and think that's a great idea! I would keep the clothespins and move the animal tags somewhere else (they are cool, but they don't fill the jar enough) and fill up the tall jar with multi-colored buttons (sometimes you can get big bags of buttons from Goodwill).

    Good luck! :)

  11. Hi! I agree with the others, I'd keep the apothecary jars and the red washboard, and remove all of the small stuff. then unify the colors by changing whats inside of the jars, maybe go all red, to go with the wash board?
