Candlestick Makeover

I love candlesticks. But I hate retail prices! And I hardly ever find them thrifting. But I have managed to collect a few, 5 to be exact. I didn't really have plan for them as I collected them, but I finally drug them out and gave them a paint job. Here they are before. This one was $1 and had a $20 price tag on the bottom.





For this one, we took out the little part that holds a taper. And apparently I forgot to take a picture of the last one, but it painted gold. Yuck.








And here they are now. Missing one candle of course. Why are decent candles to hard to find? I didnt want the kind with the rounded tops, but that's all I could find that were white. Any suggestions? I also added the little milk glass thing I found.

What I'm not sure on, is the color. It's Blue Ocean Breeze from Krylon. It looks more turquoise in real life than those pictures. Are they too bright? As you can see, our walls are beige but I'm slowly trying to add more color. I thought about Peekaboo Blue (Krylon) but I kinded of wanted an aqua-ish color. Please share your honest opinion of the color! :)

I had to run to Michael's yesterday so I grabbed another candle. That yellow pottery is McCoy & I dug it out of my back yard!

More Prior Finds

Man, I cant believe it's been a week since I posted! I do have things I want to blog, dont know what happened! I've got a couple finished projects and one I need help with. Plus a few things I found this weekend. But for now, I want to share some things I picked up back in February.


I've long admired all the chandelier makeovers I see around the blogosphere. And now I will finally get to join in! I found this brass "beauty" for $2! She's going to replace a ceiling fan in our hallway and will look much better with a paint job. I think I want a blue/aqua but I can't seem to find a color I like. I saw a gorgeous color in Country Living called Catalina Mist (by Krylon) but apparently it's been discontinued. Does anyone know of another brand with that sort of color?



When I saw this vintage box of Crayola's, I almost didn't ask the price, assuming it would be pricy. But it was only $.50!



It even has its' crayons.







I found this thing at the little antique shop down the road that we like (The Scrounge Around Shop). Not sure what it is, but they had a ton of them and I liked its' shape and milk glass color.

I just can't pass up affordable Pyrex!

I bought this little purse to put in my Etsy shop. I hope to one day soon build my shop a little more!

It's so hard to pass up a good frame. I really want to make one of those photo collage walls one day. I just can't decide where.

I'm not sure I will ever luck out in the vintage Christmas department like some of you, but I seem to be finding little bits & pieces here and there. I found two bundles of old C9 lights. I'm not sure if I wan to try and use them as lights, or just as jar fillers. I haven't tested them to see if they work or not.

Vacation Finds

One afternoon during our vacation, Mike & I managed to escape (well, Morgan too) and check out a local antique shop. That particular one was called Dusty Treasures in Axton, VA, but we also ended up stopping at several more before we made it back to Florida. Here's what we found!




I picked up a couple of these. I think I'm going to put these in a frame together along with one I found awhile back.




A couple of years ago, I picked up a little Kromex grease pot for $.05 at the thrift store. Lucky me, Mike found a small set. I knew I had to have it!




This was something he picked out, some old ice tongs.

These crocks were everywhere. I would love to have one of the ones with a crown on it, but that will have to be another trip.

I really dont ever look at Pyrex at the antique shops, other than to admire them or say "hey, I have that one!" I then look at the price and think, "wow, that's insane". But I found this little piece on a $1.00 table.

And this great, HUGE bottle.

I grabbed this feed sack and plan to make a pillow or two with it.

We have been looking for a milk can for awhile now. I either cant find them, or they're over prices. We saw these in Dusty Treasures but didnt really plan on getting them. I was actually looking at the crocks, and Mike said something to the man about them. He said he'd give them to us for $15 for the both of them. Yep, $7.50 a piece. SOLD!

And last but not least, another old school desk. The color doesnt show well in this picture, but that paint is the prettiest shade of blue. This is now an end table in our living room. Pictures to come later!

It was nice to get out and look without the kids, at least for one store. We had all three of them for the rest!

Eggstra Fun Egg Swap Revealed!

We're back! I have a bunch of pictures I want to share, and some great stuff we found at the antique shops. We got in about 2:45 Saturday morning. It would have been about 12:20, but those darn antique shops were too tempting. When I got home, I found my Eggstra Fun Egg Swap package waiting for me! Everyone did such a great job on their eggs! Since I think everyone has probably gotten theirs, I thought I would go ahead and post about the ones I made.



Yep, I wrapped all of those eggs with thread. I used DMC Pearl Cotton. I started with blue, but ran out and had to go with purple. I kind of like the purple better! Underneath is just a regular old plastic egg. I primed them white just incase any color peeked through. I glued the thread down with tacky glue.

The flowers are Prima flowers I painted pink, and I found the birds in the bridal section at Joanns. The lace is vintage stuff I thrifted. Pardon my fingers, I took these in the car at the post office before I mailed them out!

I am sorry that some popped off in transit, I hope you were able to fix them. I didnt even think about wrapping them individually. I hope you all have a happy Easter!

Some Great Finds!

Another old posts, lots of great finds!

I know I have been slacking in the vintage department lately. I haven't been yardsaling in ages and trips to the thrift are here and there. The few yardsales I have stopped at have been mostly junk (not the good kind) and I haven't actually planned a day to go. But I was off yesterday, and after dropping Blake off at school, I spotted a yard sale sign. I figured, why not? That's where I found these blue Mason jars. I can't pass these things up if they are a good price!

I also found this little mama hen. She's missing a little bit of paint here, but I think she's cute anyway.

Thursday night, we found a place near us that has a thrift store & auctions. They said it's a thrift store Thursday-Saturday, and then every other Thursday they hold auctions. I found this Fire King bowl for $.25 in the thrift area. Blake scored a pretty good deal in the auction. A Nintendo DS (not the Lite, the older model) for $30. And this little clay bowl (?) I dug out of the backyard yesterday. It was in the same area that I found the McCoy & Regal pieces. It's terra cotta, but an odd shape to me. I've never seen one like this. And it has a little hole in the center.

Yesterday I also had to take some things to donate to the St. Anthony's (the catholic thrift). It had been awhile since I had stopped by, so I decided to take a look. I haven't really been posting prices, but I coudln't pass these up at $.10 for the Pyrex & $.05 for the Corelle! Sometimes I feel bad paying so little, but I also donate a lot here, so I guess it equals out, right?

I have passed up this plate at two different thrift shops (St. Anthony's & another). I happened to notice in Flickr that this pattern seems to be fairly popular, so for $.10, I decided, why not? If I decide I don't want it, I figured I could use it in a giveaway or swap. The maker is Marcrest and the pattern is calling Swiss Chalet or Alpine.

Last week, we had a silent auction at work. I didn't really think to check out the goods, but afterwards, one of the nurse's came up to me with these salt & pepper shakers. She wanted me to look them up. Then she told me to take them since she had gotten four for $1, and didn't need all four. The bottom says Federal Housewares.

Also from the auction, Mike bid on this box of frames. I wasn't expecting that, but I am always getting frames from the thrift for various projects, and most of these look like I can redo them without too much trouble.

Back to St. Anthony's... I saw this vintage-looking fabric rolled up near the Christmas stuff. At first I thought apron(!?) or tablecloth (!?), but no, they are curtains. I still think they are great! And they are in great shape so they defiantly can be repurposed. I have LARGE windows so they won't be able to serve their original purpose. There was one of this pattern in a very long valance and a curtain.

And then there were two of these much smaller valances. If you look, this matches the background pattern in the other fabric.

And for my favorite find? QUILTS! Two of them! My first ever! These came from the place that has the auctions. I was walking around inside and didn't really expect to find anything. The inside was mostly furniture with some clothes, electronics, porcelain dolls, etc. But then I saw these peeking out. As I searched for a price tag, I was expecting the worse. But when I saw the $4 price tag on both of them, I had to have them! I just love this orange and brown one. But when I got home and unfolded them, I found these two holes. It almost broke my heart! LOL. This one is big enough to fit our queen bed, but these holes... Other than this they are pretty stain-free and could just use a nice cleaning. I don't think I have the heart to cut this, can anthing be done to save it?

The other quilt has no holes thankfully! And it's also in pretty good shape, just needs to be cleaned. (Sorry some of the pictures are kind of washed out, I had them stretched out in the sun)

The only issue with this one, is some of the edges are a little thin with a few small holes worn in them.
